Happy Movement Monday! Movement for Happiness is a wellbeing skill that encourages us to find ways to move our bodies in ways that bring us joy. Each Monday, we’re highlighting stories of autistic people and what type(s) of movement bring them joy. 

Meet Lily, a content creator, autistic advocate, and co-host of the Easterseals podcast Everything You Know About Disability is Wrong. She, too, believes developing a joyful movement practice can lead to wellbeing and recognizes the deep connection between movement and emotions.

For Lily, starting the day with a walk makes her a better version of herself; it helps her set a positive tone for the day ahead. “You don’t have to make choices during that time,” she said. Walking, lifting weights, or using the elliptical (bilateral movement) helps her release extra energy and calm her mind when she feels agitated. But her favorite type of movement? Swimming. “There’s something about being in a body of water that feels calming and energizing at the same time.”

As an autistic person, Lily knows how overwhelming sensory experiences can be, and movement is one way she navigates these experiences. “When my thoughts are too fast, physical movement can slow them down.” She offered advice for those wanting to start a movement practice: “Lead with joy, honest joy. Let go of what you think movement should look like and embrace what feels good. Sometimes, that might be spinning in circles, and that’s okay!” 

Lily also emphasizes the importance of “body doubling,” or doing a movement activity with a loved one, to stay motivated. “Movement with someone I love makes it more fun. I’m more likely to stick to routines if my pattern recognition sends me joy,” she says. Her partner often joins her on walks or bike rides, making movement a shared experience that brings them closer together. This joyful connection to movement is key for Lily, and she encourages others to find their own routines that are both fun and sustainable.
