Every October, Proof Positive joins organizations and advocates across the country in celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce.
But at Proof Positive, we see NDEAM as an opportunity to take the conversation beyond employment and into what truly fuels wellbeing: engagement.
Engagement Is the Heart of Employment
Employment is more than a paycheck—it’s a source of purpose, belonging, and contribution. When we’re engaged in what we do and when our strengths, skills, and passions align with our daily activities, we feel connected, capable, and fulfilled.
Research in positive psychology shows that engagement is one of the key ingredients for happiness. When we find ways to participate meaningfully in life, whether through work, relationships, or community, we experience greater joy, motivation, and overall wellbeing.
Engagement can happen in countless ways:
- Employment: Using your strengths in a full-time or part-time role
- Volunteering: Contributing your time and talents to your community
- Caregiving: Supporting loved ones or managing a household
- Learning: Exploring new skills or creative pursuits that spark curiosity
- Connection: Sharing your unique gifts and perspective with others
Each of these acts of engagement adds to our collective wellbeing. Every time someone contributes in large or small ways, our communities grow stronger, more inclusive, and more vibrant.
You don’t have to be employed to be happy. But everyone deserves the opportunity to feel engaged, valued, and fulfilled — to wake up with a sense of purpose and end the day knowing their contributions matter.
This month, Proof Positive is celebrating the many ways people with disabilities engage, connect, and contribute to a happier world.
So, we invite you to reflect:
What makes your day feel meaningful and engaging?
Let’s continue to build communities where every person, in every role, has the opportunity to thrive.
